The Road Not Taken

Yesterday evening, my husband called me from the job sight, and asked me to bring him some tools he needed for the electrical job he was working on. So I grabbed the tools and climbed in my mini-van.

After entering the free-way to make it to the other side of town faster-a blinding snow storm hit our area. I slowed way down to get off the exit and could barely see the signs. I made it to the neighborhood he was in, and called him on my cell-phone to get directions. When I told him I could not see the street signs-he came down the road to find me and I followed him back to the house he was working on. A quick hug, kiss and a bucket of tools out the door...and I was faced with the task of making it home without sliding off the road!

I did great all the way across town and then I was faced with the problem of how to make it back up to the hill that I live on...which way would be safer to take? Well, the city has put a new speed bump/water run-off at the bottom of one side of our hill. All my neighbors have said that this is sure to create a nasty pile-up during the bad weather. So, I drove past that road up the hill. I chose the road with the S-curve. I know, your wondering how much safer could that be?! Crazy choice-but the only other option would be to go clear around the mountain and go up Walmart hill (Also very steep!). I just wanted to get home to my kids and put my car safe back into the driveway. So, as I was driving with both hands on the wheel- I said a serious prayer in my heart-and stubbornly took the S-curve. I was giving myself a pep-talk and asking Heavenly Father to guide me all the way up. My kids were calling on my cell-phone-but there was no way I was taking my hands off the wheel! It was a total miracle to not slide off the road-I only had one scary moment of my car swerving. I didn't hit the brakes, just kept on steering the van in the dark snow-storm, till I saw my driveway and pulled up to the house.

Before going in, I once again spoke out-loud to thank the Heavens Above for truly guiding me and keeping my car safe. Every step of my life, has had miracles-even through darkness and uncertain moments. I may not follow the path that the world takes, but I am all the better for it. I know that we have challenges ahead of us all-but we can stay strong and ask for help from our Heavenly Father. He's always listening!

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Robert Frost (1874–1963). Mountain Interval. 1920.

I love this poem and how you chose to see the spiritual coneection in this incident!!

Can I just say tho--you so rock--I have a S curve too--but lots of times we have to just park at the bottom and drive 4 wheelers up.

I have heard the last two lines of that poem but I didn't know it was an actual poem! I always thought it was just some line that some guy said some time ago. So it makes a lot more sense now that I've read the whole thing! Thank you!

I couldn't live in super cold areas for that very reason! So glad you made it safely..and yes, an S curve sounds dangerous in icy conditions! Love the story and the poem. What a great reminder!

This was awesome, Dolly! Thank you for the reminder of how important prayer and faith are, and that they really do work. I get really nervous driving in snowy, icy weather, and I know I've avoided accidents because I had divine help from the other side.
