My Son's Road Rash

Tonight, my son came inside from "long-boarding" around town. He yells to my husband and me, "I crashed! I crashed!". He's eighteen and stubbornly independant now. I have told him and told him that crazy things can happen. My good friend had her son crash a few months ago.

Her son had just returned from a mission. He went out to long-board with his buddies and was hit by a car. He was life flighted north and was in the hospital for several weeks. He laid there in a coma and I'm sure his parents wondered if he'd even survive. But this R.M. is home and alive-thanks to some amazing doctors and Divine Intervention! No matter how scary it sounded and how sad it is to see her son slowly learn how to walk and communicate...my kid still felt that he was invincible. Nothing could shake his freedom...until tonight! Tonight, he begged his dad to clean his wounds and bandage him up. My son called one of our ward doctors and got a fast lesson on how to clean open wounds. We used hydrogen peroxide and polysporin...Poor boy was crying, screaming-tears running down his face. I was just an emotional wreck too.

Luckily, our doctor sent home some topical numbing gels and this helped with the pain. Our son scraped his hands, knees, eye-brow, back, arms, and palms of his hands. We had to wrap him in plastic seran-wrap to help the cleansing begin. I am so glad that we have great neighbors. The friends are now over here to hear about the "moment of impact". Hubby and I are not looking forward to a long night tending of playing nurse. Tomorrow will be crazy scrubbing those wounds again. I'm glad I changed the dirty diapers when this son was a baby. Now it's Hubby's turn to handle the gory war-wounds! The miracle that came out of the whole night...our son let his dad and our neighbor give him a blessing. This is a huge spiritual moment I'll cherish forever.

I'm so glad he is okay. Jill is in our ward and we witnessed what her and her family went through. I am so happy that he has learned a life lesson, it's not always an easy lesson. That looks like it hurts, poor kid.

I don't know what longboarding is but the road rash...OUCH! It could have been much worse and thankfully it isn't but still...way painful!

Reason 434 that I don't do anything that could inflict a wound like that!! Ouch! I hope you made it through the night okay. I so can't do the wound cleaning thing. Phil did Kelly's the whole time he was home because I am a sissy. At least now it doesn't look as bad--but Milan will probably have to help me so I don't gag. I can't even pull splinters out of my kids fingers.

I AM SOOOO glad it wasn't any worse and that he accepted a blessing. Small miracles!

That looks awful! Poor guy. I can't imagine how hard that must have been for him to go through and then for you as his mother to see his pain.
What in the heck is longboarding? It sounds like bad news!
